-
- 000 *** ABOUT DATASHOP
-
- Datashop runs under Windows or IRIX/SGI. Datasets for Macintosh applications
- may be delivered via ftp/internet or via overnight courier directly from Viewpoint.
- This is a two volume set. Each CD includes unique categories
- of models. Be sure to check both CDs for the model you need. While running
- Datashop, no setup files will be copied to your hard drive. Only the Datasets you
- select for download will be copied to your drive.
-
- IF YOU HAVE PROBLEMS THAT RESULT IN NOT BEING ABLE TO RUN
- THE DATASHOP PROGRAM, PLEASE CALL VIEWPOINT. OUR 3D MODELS ARE
- AVAILABLE THROUGH OTHER MEDIA AND SERVICES. WE WOULD APPRECIATE
- YOUR CALL. ALSO, CHECK US OUT ON THE WEB.
-
- If you are reading this, chances are you have Datashop
- mounted and working to the point you can launch it. If you have
- experienced some technical difficulty running this under Windows or
- on an SGI, please review the following lists for either Windows (001)
- or IRIX/SGI (002).
-
-
- 001 *** DATASHOP FOR WINDOWS
- 1A You should acquaint yourself with Windows and be familiar
- enough to access the CD directory and click on the Viewpoint
- Datashop icon.
-
- 1B Do you have enough RAM? You will need at least 6 Mb of RAM to
- run this application.
-
- 1C Do you have enough conventional memory free? You will need 575Kb.
-
- 1D You must have at least 800x600 screen resolution capability.
-
- 1E Do you have enough free space on your hard drive to download a
- file. If you have less than 5 Mb free, we recommend clearing
- more space.
-
- 1F The default path that is set for downloading files, will be
- "c:\datashop". When you are in the "4 steps to download..." screen
- and are prompted to verify your download path; you may accept
- "c:\datashop" or you may type in a different directory path.
-
- 1G Is the power turned on to all of your hardware? Believe it or
- not, this is sometimes a solution.
-
- 1H If you are networked, are there any network related problems?
-
- 1I In very rare cases, usually when a network is involved, there
- may be permissions problems that will restrict reading or
- writing to the current directory. This scenario may not allow
- you to download a dataset. If you just created this directory
- to download to, change to a different directory you know you
- can copy files to and then try again.
-
- 1J You must be using current versions of the following DLL's:
- bwcc.dll
- bc453rtl.dll
- bids47.dll
- owl253.dll
- You will experience errors if your system has old versions of these
- DLL's in its c:\windows\system directory. If you experience errors,
- you may replace the DLL's currently on your system with the
- updated DLL's found on the DataShop CD in the \bin\windows
- directory.
-
- 1K If none of the above suggestions help, please give us a call.
-
-
- 002 *** DATASHOP FOR IRIX/SGI
-
- 2A You should have a basic knowledge of working in/on a IRIX/SGI.
- You should be able to change directory to the path you would
- like to download to.
- e.g., 1% cd [your/path] ...and then hit enter
-
- 2B Some common UNIX commands:
- man There is a series of "man" (manuals) that will list
- the syntax and usage of any command. If I wanted to
- know what the "cd" command does I may do the following:
- e.g., 2% man cd ...and then hit enter
- A manual page for "cd" will be displayed.
-
- COMMAND DESCRIPTION
- cd Change directory
- cd .. This will take you up one directory.
- df This will list the verified, mounted drives.
- hinv This will give a listing of all the installed hardware.
- ls This will list the current directory
- ls -a This lists all files including dot files
- ls -l This lists all available directories and files in long
- format. It will show permissions, owner, size, date and
- full name.
- EXAMPLE OF ls -l
- -rwxrwxrwx 1 pau techpro 2145238 Jan 13 15:24 pammy*
- -rw-rw-rw- 1 acr techdev 231 Jan 13 15:24 tmpucode.var
- (permissions) (owner) (group) (file size) (date) (time) (full name)
-
- 2C You need to go to a directory on your hard drive.
- (refer to the info above). When you are in the directory where you
- wish to deposit your datasets you will need to execute Datashop.
-
- 2D To execute Datashop from the SGI, you simply type the path
- to the cd and include the executable "datashop"...
- e.g., 3% /CDROM/datashop ...and then hit enter.
- Datashop should now be on your screen and the default download
- directory should be the directory you launched from.
-
- 2E Permissions on your directory may restrict reading or writing
- when you try to download. Make sure you have permissions set
- correctly.
-
- 2F Configuration of hardware or external components may not be
- turned on or may not be connected correctly.
-
- 2G Do you have enough space free on your hard drive to allow for
- a download. Free up some space if necessary. (df command)
-
- 2H You must have at least 800x600 screen resolution capability.
-
- 2I If you are networked, are there complications due to your
- networking?
-
- 2J If none of the above suggestions help, please give us a call.
-
- 003 *** SPECIFIC SOFTWARE TIPS
-
- SoftImage
- After downloading a file from DataShop you should select the entire
- model and run the following command:
- ->Effects
- -> Recompute Normal
- This will compute the vertex normals needed to display shading correctly.
-
- Softimage
- Periodically you may experience a message similar to the following:
- WARNING:* ....4 & 408, that have the same oriented edge (1,268)
- Use the ->Effects
- ->Reorder
- Save the file out and read it back in. This should eliminate the message.
-
-
- N-Geometry
- Files downloaded for N-Geometry will be downloaded in .obj format.
- These files should be 'imported' into N-Geo using the following command:
- Main Menu
- -> Add New Object
- -> Read
- -> obj
-
-
- Alias polys
- Alias polygons may be used by importing either dxf or obj. DXF files
- will retain grouping. OBJ files will require the following steps to extract
- the groups:
- 1. Select "Set - Set Lister" under the Windows menu
- 2. The group names will now be displayed in a dialog box
- 3. Open the SBD window. One node of the whole object will be present
- 4. Select the group name from the dialog box from "Set Lister"
- 5. Go to "Polygon Edit" and select "Extract Polygons"
- A new node of the extracted geometry will be in the SBD window
- 6. You can rename the node to reflect what it is
- 7. Repeat this for each individual group
-
- ElectricImage
- Since these files are downloaded on the PC or SGI, they do not retain the
- resource fork for the Macintosh. Therefore, you must use the 'Import"
- command when reading these files into ElectricImage on the Mac.
-
- 004 *** KEYWORD SEARCH
- 4A The SEARCH function provides a way to use related words to
- find a specific Dataset on Datashop. Simply enter in the
- appropriate information you think will help locate what you
- are searching for. Be as general or specific as you would
- like. If your search has no match, simply widen/shorten the
- parameters and try again.
-
- 4B The search is not case sensitive. Any input letter will be
- recognized as lower case.
-
- 4C The search has been updated to include the ability to choose
- a range in quantity of polygons. Use the "min number of
- polygons:" and the "max number of polygons:" to determine a
- range of polygons to search on.
-
- 4D You may use AND, OR, & NOT to restrict your search. A space
- between words has the same result as using AND.
- EXAMPLE: A search on the word HORSE would give you a listing
- of all of the horse related Datasets available on the CD. To
- begin your search, enter your word and be sure to click the
- SEARCH ALL button. You cannot search the "Search Current
- Category" unless you are in a specific category
-
- 4E If after an extensive search you still cannot find what you
- would like, give us a call. Viewpoint has many new Dataset
- models that are available. And, if we don't have it, we will find it.
- And if we can't find it we will build it.
-
-

- exact model that will be used in the final shot. This way both departments
- get started in parallel. Or you may find that you can use a Viewpoint
- model in the starring role of your project, as the supporting cast or as
- 'extras'. Or, a Viewpoint model may provide the starting point to
- produce your own characters and environments in much less time
- than starting from scratch. Either way, using Viewpoint means getting
- a head start. Call us to find out more about the rules of
- the game at...
- 1-800-DATASET (328-2738) or 801-229-3000.
